Rock N Roll Nerd 3.5/5 (89 min) MA
Fabulous, revealing, often painfully honest documentary by Rhian Skirving about the sudden career inflammation of talented Melbourne comedian Tim Minchin. Catching him at the very start of his rise at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the camera follows Minchin to Edinburgh and London where the price of success and the sudden flush of money sometimes hit Minchin at a rate too quick for him to fully process. This is easily one of the best documentaries made about modern show business, and again underscores how adept Australian filmmakers are with the form. Recent feature docos such as Lionel, Beyond Our Ken, Forbidden Lies, and Whatever Happened to Brenda Hean? brandish the type of energy, creativity and daring so often missing from our features. Why this is so remains a great conversation starter. -- JIM SCHEMBRI
